Unlike some other treatments, Radical Prostatectomy works to eliminate the cancer entirely, reducing the risk of it reoccurring in you.

 

Who Needs Radical Prostatectomy?

We typically recommend it for men with localized prostate cancer, meaning the cancer is confined to the prostate gland and has not spread to other parts of the body.

However, not all patients with prostate cancer are suitable candidates for this procedure. We will evaluate several factors to determine if Radical Prostatectomy is the appropriate treatment option for you.

Here are some common scenarios where we can recommend Radical Prostatectomy

1. Early-Stage Prostate Cancer: Men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer (stage I or II) are considered good candidates for Radical Prostatectomy. At these stages, the cancer is still localized and has not spread beyond the prostate gland, increasing the chances of successful removal.
2. Younger Patients with Longer Life Expectancy: Radical Prostatectomy is frequently recommended for younger men (typically under 70 years old) with a longer life expectancy. For these patients, the potential benefits of removing the cancerous prostate outweigh the risks associated with the procedure.
3. Aggressive or High-Risk Prostate Cancer: In some cases, Radical Prostatectomy may be suggested for men with more aggressive or high-risk forms of prostate cancer, even if the cancer has not yet spread beyond the prostate. This approach aims to prevent further progression.

 

The Procedure Explained

Radical Prostatectomy is a complex surgery that requires meticulous planning and execution. Here’s what you can expect during the procedure:

1. Pre-Surgery Preparations: We will provide detailed instructions on preparing for the surgery, including dietary restrictions, medication adjustments, and any necessary tests.
2. The Surgery: There are three main types of Radical Prostatectomy we perform:

• Open Prostatectomy: A traditional approach that involves a larger incision in the lower abdomen.
• Laparoscopic Prostatectomy: A minimally invasive approach that uses several small incisions and specialized instruments.
• Robotic Prostatectomy: An advanced technique that utilizes robotic arms and a high-definition 3D camera for enhanced precision and control. The robotic approach is currently unavailable in Nigeria and West Africa.

1. Procedure: During the surgery, we will carefully remove the prostate gland, some surrounding tissues, and nearby lymph nodes (if necessary).

The duration of the procedure can vary depending on the approach and complexity of individual cases.

 

Recovery and Aftercare

The recovery process after Radical Prostatectomy can be gradual, but with proper care and support, most patients can expect a smooth transition back to their regular activities.

• Immediate Post-Op: You can expect some discomfort, swelling, and the need for a catheter to drain urine while healing.
• Long-Term Recovery: Follow our instructions regarding physical activity, diet, and any necessary medications or follow-up appointments.
• Post-op course: Almost everyone after Radical Prostatectomy has initial stress continence and some degree of erectile dysfunction, which in most cases improve and are treatable. Many factors affect how quickly function returns, and this is discussed in detail before surgery.
